Goal Setting for Your Vision Board

S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting

What is S.M.A.R.T. goal setting? It’s setting a goal for a Specific, Measurable, Attainable, and Results-focused Time frame. Typical time frames vary from a few weeks to a few months. In some cases, the time frame for a goal may be a year or more. It all depends upon the goal. This is the system I used for some of the goals I have on my vision board but a few of them are not following S.M.A.R.T. system very well, if at all. And I think that’s okay.

Vision Board and Evidence Book

In my post about Vision Boards, I mentioned that I had set and represented nine goals on my personal vision board. Each of the nine goals relates to a specific topic or idea according to Feng Shui Bagua. (Read what the nine areas are in this post.) So what are my nine goals represented on my personal vision board?

To the left is an image of my vision board (without evidence book) that I recreated recently after creating a first draft vision board with some friends in Mid-December.

Personal Goals for the Year 2016

Goal 1, Wealth and Prosperity: I will save every $5 dollar bill that comes into my possession. I saw this idea on Pinterest. The pin stated that the pinner had saved every $5 bill that came into her possession for a year. At the end of the year, she’d saved quite a bit of money. I may save more, I may save less than the pinner who has inspired me to do the same, but either way I’ll have saved a bit of money I can use to put to good use next year. Ask me what I plan to do with all that money when I’m working on next year’s vision board, okay? And if you want to read about how this goal was accomplished by the one whose inspired it on my vision board, you can so here.

Goal 2, Fame and Reputation: I will follow the golden rule of treating others the way I would like to be treated in return.

Goal 3, Love and Relationships: I will always love as fiercely as Mulan loves her family. If you read my first post on participating in the 100 Happy Days Challenge, you’ll know that over the last year I’ve come a LONG way in learning to love myself, my life, and appreciate my friends. I’ve struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. But having found the strength to win that fight which at times seemed impossible, I know that I have a purpose. And my friends will always know that I love and care for them, that I will always see them as a person with feelings and emotions even when they make mistakes. It’s for that very reason I chose this ring from Mulan to represent my goal. Mulan is my favorite Disney Princess (yes, I said Princess). She fought in a war, risking death because of the love she had for not just her father but her parents relationship as a couple. She’s also one of the select few Disney Princesses who is a lot more independent, in my opinion, not waiting around for Prince Charming to come and save her. I think that’s pretty damn empowering.

Goal 4, Family and Community: I want to have a family movie night at least once per month. My family used to go out to the theatre every so often and see a new movie. As prices have gotten higher, it’s just no longer feasible for a family of four or five to go see a movie at the theatre on a regular basis. We go less than once a year, and much of it is due to the convenience of Netflix and similar services along with the rising cost of going out. Still, it’d be nice to sit down together and watch a movie instead of retreating into our own worlds in our rooms on a more regular basis than we do now (which is hardly ever).

Goal 5, Health and Wellness: I will participate in a triathlon for a good cause. I have wanted to participate in a triathlon for a few years now. While some individuals participate in marathons and triathlons just for the hell of it, I know I need something more to motivate myself to do it. Especially during training. I love the idea of fundraising by participating in an athletic event, but what cause would I be raising these funds for? That question always stumped me. Recently, I came across the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. Finally, I’ve feel certain I’ve found my cause, and quite possibly, my event.

Goal 6, Creativity and Inspiration: I will learn to play my favorite songs on acoustic guitar. In high school, I had a few free periods and for one of them, I was given the opportunity to learn classical acoustic guitar. I am so grateful I was given that opportunity because I’ve got much more appreciation for acoustic guitar and music in general. At the end of the semester, my parents bought me my own acoustic guitar. Now, it’s been collecting dust in the corner for a few years and I’m finding myself listening to songs I wish I could play and sing myself. So that is something I will definitely be working on this year.

Goal 7, Wisdom and Self-Improvement: I will complete 30 different challenges before I turn 30. I just celebrated my 29th birthday, and I recently completed my first challenge. I learned a lot about myself while completing the 100 Happy Days Challenge that I’m excited to see how much I could learn by completing more challenges, and decided 30 before 30 had a nice ring to it. Some of the challenges may indeed last 30 days, but I think too many 30 day challenges in only one year may be overdoing it, so I’m going to stick with challenges of differing lengths. (I’m currently working on two challenges: going from walking to running, and a 2-week plank challenge to strengthen arm and ab muscles. I’m falling in love with planks!)

Goal 8, Career and Mission: I will open an Etsy online shop. I’ve wanted to own a fashion boutique since childhood. A few friends have joked about my closet being it’s own boutique and since much of the clothing in there no longer fits me, I’ve decided once I start clearing it out soon, I may put some pieces up for sale online someplace.

Goal 9, Benevolence and Synchronicity: I will travel overseas and volunteer with Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary in Costa Rica. I love animals, and travelling. While I’ve travelled all over the states, I’ve never actually been overseas. This goal will combine a few different loves of mine – travelling, animals, and helping others.

What are your thoughts on the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting system? Do you think my goals are achievable? What are some of your goals for the next year or two?
